Altair Fontaine is a conjuror-soldier who fights for the city-state Aegea, working to protect its citizens from the Adriatic Empire. Altair takes pride in himself and his ability to the extent that many people conclude that he is arrogant. He considers himself to be a master strategist, both on and off the battlefield itself. While most conjurors struggle to strategize and position their sorcerers correctly, Altair takes it even further. He concerns himself with the placement of other conjurors on both sides, working to protect the people of Aegea with positional advantages. He is also a talented machinist and engineer, having created his own prosthetic arm. He often helps out in the infirmary, both as a volunteer and as a defender. He built a pegleg (and later a cane) to help Elena stand upright, but he complains any time he does something nice for anyone. Altair does not get much sleep, and sometimes he gives in to obsessive paranoia. He is good friends with Romulo and Terrance.

After losing Romulo, Altair resolves to train Elena as her personal mentor. He explains to her details of manifesting sorcerers and the different types. He searches for opportunities to grow her strength, though he insults her abilities many times in the process. He considers himself to be just about the smartest conjuror, but due to severe injuries he suffered in a loss long ago, Altair cannot conjure at full power. His injuries limit him from manifesting multiple sorcerers. However, his prosthetic arm also gives him the ability to scramble another conjuror's monolith. This has let him escape many perilous situations in the past.
(Spoilers for Episode 9 are below)
Despite being critically injured in that fight, Altair considers the man who defeated him to be the ultimate sorcerer. However, this is also a testament to his arrogance. By his own admission, the man who defeated him appeared to be a second Altair with the same appearance and ability. Besides this one opponent, Altair considers most other conjurors to be beneath him. He does not make many friends, but he has a soft spot for simple music. He plays string instruments when he is alone, and he excitedly cheers on other musicians (but only in places where no one will recognize him).
