Character: Norman Shawcross

I don't think I have a conscience, and I don't think anyone else really does either. I think we pretend to because we know we're supposed to have one, but it's just a case of the blind leading the blind. Everyone pretends they do, and all we see is people upholding the illusion that they themselves aren't different. It's all a lie. The proof is everywhere, so I'll just grab the closest example. This island war has all the proof you need. People pretend they have some innate sense of right and wrong, but if you give them the slightest excuse, they will happily and fervently do unspeakable things to other men. They'll enslave cities and slaughter civilians just because someone else said it was okay. Just because someone else said that their victims are the enemy.

Norman Shawcross is a major character in Interitus 3: The Ocean Has Her Reasons. Holden meets him after the Seismic Flux Syndicate attacks Norman's home, kidnapping his wife and killing their closest friends. The two form an unlikely bond as they hunt down raiders from the Syndicate, working to get back his wife (Sadie Shawcross). Norman quickly reveals that he has little interest in ordinary ideas of right and wrong, as he focuses almost exclusively on his love for his wife and his desire to find her. Because of his attachment to her, he knows/cares little about the world and the war which ravaged it. He even believes that his older brother may be a high-ranking member of the Syndicate, but because it does not interest him, he does not know much beyond that.

Norman later reveals that he lost his memory in an accident six years ago, and he has virtually no memory of his life before this. While on the run from his brother's legacy, he worked as a thief-for-hire since he had no other way to make ends meet. Before long, he met Sadie Shawcross and quickly fell in love. They eloped and hid themselves away.

In contrast to his general disinterest for the world, Norman expresses a general fear of swimming in the ocean. Despite his strong swimming skills, he is irrationally afraid of sharks for reasons he claims to not remember.
