The tempest of lost souls (Touched by the darkness)

“The storm of screaming souls surrounds every thought and swallows the hollows of this hopeless world. The tempest of the damned roars on even when my eyes are closed. It is a symphony of anguished screams – an orchestra of broken souls. A storm that wages on, both when I fight and when I am most alone. I hear every shriek of those who were lost to this evil, and I can hear nothing else.”

If a person makes physical contact with an Interfectus and somehow survives, they sometimes (but not always) become touched by the darkness. This condition causes their eyes to turn gold, and they become cursed to eternally hear a tempest of lost souls screaming in their head. The victim can never escape these screams, not even when they sleep. These screaming souls belong to the victims of the Interfecti. Some souls manage to find their memories and reassemble themselves inside the storm of screaming spirits, but this is a very rare situation. Most souls have lost their memories and shout eternally because it is all that they know. Everyone who has ever been touched by the darkness is eventually driven insane by the anguish, and this insanity causes them to violently lash out upon the world. As a result, these people are sometimes called the children of the Interfecti. In Agrideī, golden eyes are seen as a warning sign.

The Interfecti empower themselves and pay the cost for their powers by burning life energy from the tempest. However, these screaming souls can burn themselves and empower any person with a link to the tempest. In other words, anyone who is touched by the darkness can access a near-infinite supply of Quintessence by sacrificing lost souls. The difference is that only an Interfectus can force a lost soul to burn; a human must convince the souls to use them as fuel.
