Phil Williams is one of the most prominent characters of Interitus 1 in that he is unique from other characters in almost every way. He is the deuteragonist/best friend/sidekick of Seth Freeman, and the two have shared an extremely close friendship since they were five years old. They see each other very frequently, train together, and tackle most problems together. Like Seth, he is around 21 years old, living with in San Diego when The Dawn of Destruction begins. In their friendship, Phil is definitely the more outlandish/hyperactive one while Seth is more reserved in most ways.
While Phil also runs and trains with Seth, doing his best to keep up, his day-to-day life consisted of various Physics/Engineering projects while also sporadically attending college classes. Even in flashbacks, he does not take school seriously or care much for it, but he is exceptional in the fields of Math, Physics, and Engineering. He is the most inventive and intelligent character in the Interitus 1 cast, often solving problems using his understanding of mechanics. Just as Phil tries to keep up with Seth in running, Seth tries to keep up with Phil in understanding mechanical Physics, but he generally falls short.
Despite his exceptional intelligence, Phil struggles with social situations and does not have many friends other than Seth. At an early age, a school psychologist recommended him for an autism screening, but he and his parents refused to go any further with this. Phil feels most comfortable speaking with a 1990's style of Ebonics--a dialect he acquired more from gangster movies and old video games than real life exposure. Phil very rarely breaks this manner of speech unless he is overwhelmed with emotion, but it sometimes catches people off-guard. While Phil has a prevalent interest in the female form and internet pornography, his dating history only contains short-lived failures. He has been arrested several times, but he only has misdemeanors from exceptional circumstances (i.e. watching porn while biking down the street on a stolen bicycle. He did not know the bike was stolen).
Phil Williams is the primary comedic relief for the book, often offering a humorous take when times are tough. When Seth is especially down in the dumps, Phil will often invoke an old memory of a wild crisis they went through together. His character design is largely based off Joey Wheeler (from Yugioh), Riley Freeman (from The Boondocks), and several good friends growing up, including a close friend who always loudly speaks his mind regardless of how inappropriate the situation.
After Seth accidentally Destroys their mutual friend Iris, a very close friend to them both, Phil is left with a hole in his heart that never heals. But because Seth is reeling from this same loss as well as the guilt of having caused it, Phil suppresses his own pain and focuses on healing the friend he has left. He's a very selfless person and fighter, despite the mask he tries to put on.
