Seth Freeman is a young man (around age 21) living in San Diego when The Dawn of Destruction begins. Before the story begins, he lives a simple life in the house left behind by his deceased parents. While his friends Phil and Iris are the most important things in his life, he focuses intently on physical fitness. He is an exceptional runner, winning virtually any contest whether it is sprinting or distance. He and his best friend Phil did Track in High School, where he won second place in the state championship. Phil generally accompanies him when he races, and they often train together, but Seth is much faster. With no interest in getting a "regular job" or living a regular life, Seth planned to train other runners as a coach, as well as perhaps work one day as a personal trainer. He is half-black on his mother's side and half-white on his father's side, though his father was often away on business. Most of his childhood memories involve Phil, Iris, and his mother.
Despite his exceptional speed and strength, Seth is generally nonconfrontational and good-natured. In times of conflict, it was generally Phil who came to his rescue. And while Seth had won countless races and achieved many victories, he feared that his life was going nowhere. If someone were to ask him, he would say that his only true accomplishment was a time when he and Phil helped save people from a burning apartment.
Everything changed one night when Seth went running and saw a purple asteroid descend from the sky. His curiosity got the best of him, so he investigated the asteroid and attained the power of Destruction. But since he did not know anything he had changed, he wound up accidentally Destroying his childhood friend Iris. He blamed himself and hated his power immensely as a result, but this changed when he learned that the vessel of Creation planned to use her power to hurt people. Believing that only Destruction could stand up to the power of Creation, Seth committed himself to stopping her and saving as many lives as possible in the process. He continues to hate his power, but he accepts outside help and continues to work, training himself to be a better fighter.
Since his best friend Phil accompanies him on this journey, the two grow very close as they have no one else in the world. They have a bond so strong that they can practically communicate with a glance. They're very codependent, and they often end up making each other laugh boisterously. Seth goes as far as to say that Phil is the only thing he has left.
