The Astral Plane
The astral plane is a realm in the Interitus series (used mostly in Interitus 1, Books 1 and 2) where a soul goes when it separates from its body. This can be thought of astral projection, and the astral plane is simply an overlay on actual reality. For example, if a mountain stands in the physical world, it exists in the same location in the astral plane. The main difference is that other entities (generally, other souls-without-body) may exist there as well. In the astral plane, you can perceive things that cannot be seen in the physical world. Furthermore, a soul can pass through physically-solid objects and float into the sky. They can also travel more quickly or even enter the dreams of people with whom they are entangled.
The astral plane is often used for reconnaissance, though sometimes people will project their soul into it if their body becomes uninhabitable. In order to do this, a person must come in contact with an Equilibrium Trigger that was drawn in a special ink called Carmotium. The astral plane is a bewildering place, but it is most well-understood by Master Liu and the people at the Temple of the Skies. It generally confounds people when they enter it for the first time, and some even think they are experiencing death.
In addition, people sometimes venture into the astral plane as a form of meditation. Their bodies build energy while their soul is away, increasing their stamina when they return. Many of the villagers (most notably Zheng Lee) use the astral plane for this purpose. It should be noted that Master Liu ventures into the astral plane sparingly, noting that a dark creature lurks there.
